Description
I Sometime in the late 1980s, after working through a frigid winter in the Boston harbor, I rented a car and drove west into the Berkshires, in the early onset of a still-numbing spring. My plans were vague: I wanted to drive west till I hit the mountains, then south till the mountains changed their names. As shadows lengthened into the afternoon I went through Pittsfield, then turned south onto a small road running along a narrow, fast-moving stream. Sharp cliffs of what I took to be granite rose on my left. The sun, sinking quickly, set afire the small patches of ice that clung to the rock. At uncertain intervals swift rills of clear water came down the cliff and spread across the road before me. It seemed I did not see another car for hours. At some point I crossed an old covered bridge and took the same road south along the opposite bank. It was almost dark when I came abruptly upon a sort of Puritan bungalow, three ramshackle stories looming up suddenly at a crossroad in the dusk. Up from the dregs of my education a phrase floated like some fantastic fish, and hung suspended in the icy air: "a magnified Nuremberg toy, (James, The Europeans)" A sandwich-board sign close to the road identified the place as "The Usher Inn and Tavern." I figured I needed to stop for the night.
