Leroy Hawkins pleaded guilty and was convicted on August 13, 1963, of four offenses: Unauthorized possession of heroin, use of narcotic drugs without prescription, possession of marijuana for smoking purposes, and abandonment. The court sentenced him to concurrent terms of imprisonment, ranging from two years for abandonment to not less than two years nor more than nine years, four months on each of two of the narcotic counts. The latter was the maximum, less eight months credit for time spent in jail before conviction. Hawkins was represented by counsel.
